COCKROACHES

German Cockroach

French name:   German cockroach

English name:  German Cockroach

Latin name:      Cockroach germanica

The German cockroach, commonly known as cockroach or cockroach, is an insect that has existed for approximately 4 million years. It is an insect that has a great capacity for adaptation, which explains why this species of insect has survived through all these years.

The German cockroach is the smallest and most common of domestic cockroaches. It measures 13 to 16 mm. Its body is oval and flattened, pale brown in color, with two characteristic dark brown stripes on the front of the thorax. It is also distinguished by two long antennae curved backwards and two pairs of wings covering the abdomen. These wings are only used for gliding or turning when the insect is flipped on its back.

The German cockroach is by far the largest and most common cockroach found in homes, apartments, food markets, food production plants and restaurants. It has a great capacity for adaptation and enormous reproductive potential.

The female lays 8 to 40 eggs in an “Oothèque” capsule attached to the end of her abdomen. She transports it for 28 days and places it in a shelter 24-48 hours after hatching. A female produces 4 to 8 Oothecae during her life which can last six months.

In good conditions, their life cycle is 2 to 5 months, which allows up to 3 generations per year.

A female who lives 6 months could produce 20,000 to 30,000 new cockroaches after a year.

Ear libraries:

The ootheca is a capsule containing the cockroach’s eggs; it contains on average 30 to 40 eggs.

Habits:

Cockroaches prefer warm, humid places.

The German cockroach infests homes, restaurants, hotels, food warehouses, ships and any place where it finds food, moisture, warmth and shelter.

Generally, the German cockroach remains hidden during the day and comes out at night in search of food. It is practically omnivorous, but prefers starchy foods. It is mainly found near kitchens, pantries and anywhere food and water are accessible.

They sometimes move from one apartment to another to satisfy their vital needs or in response to the application of a repellent product.

They spend around 75% of their time in their hiding place.

Prevention

The most important thing in cockroach control is preventing infestations. Do not leave pets’ water and food available to them all day.

We must first take the necessary measures to counter their introduction into buildings and discourage any infestations by applying exemplary hygiene and cleanliness measures.

Degrease walls, cabinets and equipment occasionally.

Use sticky traps to detect the presence of cockroaches.

Avoid repellent products when their presence is confirmed.

Health risk

Cockroaches cause allergies and trigger asthma attacks. The presence of cockroaches in a living environment can also be a source of stress for the occupants.

Use of pesticide in a home

Improper use of pesticides can make the user and occupants of the home sick during and after application; pesticide poisoning can cause symptoms such as: Headaches, Skin or eye irritation, Nausea, Dizziness, Fatigue etc.
