Bedbug – What is a bedbug?

Latin Name: Cimex Lectularius

Bed bug, oval wingless insect, brownish-red in color. As an adult, it can reach 4 to 5 mm long and 1.5 to 3 mm wide.

Bedbug is a parasitic insect that feeds exclusively on blood. It is found in temperate climates across the world. Hotel, guesthouse, hospitals, retirement home, nursery, school, dormitory.

The female can lay up to 500 eggs, at a rate of 1 to 5 eggs per day. She sticks them to surfaces so that when they hatch after one to three weeks, they will be near a food source.

The nymph, which resembles the adult, undergoes five moults before reaching the adult stage, after 14 to 30 days. After each molt, the nymph must feed on blood.

Life cycle :

The life cycle length varies greatly. On average, it takes 4 to 9 weeks to complete, although sometimes it can take an entire year. There are three stages in the development cycle of the bedbug: The egg, the nymph and the adult From the egg to the adult: 21 days at 30°C and 120 days at 16°C (relative humidity 75- 80%)

Habits:

This insect is not always easy to detect, because it is mainly active at night to feed on our blood when we are deep asleep, but could be active during the day if food is not available at night or during a large infestation.

During the day, it hides near the seams of the mattress. It is then found in small cracks in walls and wood (such as the bed frame, box spring, furniture, floor or door or window frames) where it will lay its eggs. Bedbugs are attracted to carbon dioxide, heat and body odor. We generally observe that when given the choice they prefer to sting children first, women then men as a last choice.

Health risk:

  • Respiratory problem due to bedbug exuviae particles found in the air
  • Reddened, hot and tight skin, often with pain at the infection site
  • Intraepidermal bubbles, filled with clear fluid and sometimes blood.
  • Lack of sleep.

Bedbug bites:

Bedbug bites are often numerous on the skin. They are mainly found on parts of the sleeper’s body left uncovered during sleep such as the arms, shoulders, back, stomach and legs.

Normally, small red swellings appear due to an allergic reaction to the saliva injected by the bedbug 30% of the population has no reaction after a bite The reaction can appear up to 2 weeks after the bite
